The cooperative’s purpose is to meet its members’ long-term housing needs on affordable financial terms through mutual self-help and shared responsibility. By building and renting affordable housing, it seeks to provide housing for all sections of the population, especially its members, as well as families, people with disabilities and older people. Through social diversity and shared facilities, it promotes living together in a spirit of social responsibility and mutual solidarity. It also promotes the connection between living, working and culture. It aims to achieve sustainable development by aligning itself with the goals of the 2000-watt society.
Membership Requirements
- The taxable annual income per adult, as defined by the Federal Act of 14.12.1990 on Direct Federal Tax, must not exceed CHF 50’000. In households with more than two adults, the income limit increases by CHF 20’000 for each additional person. The income limit increases by CHF 2’500 for each minor child.
- Assets, less documented debts, must not exceed CHF 144’000 per adult. In households with more than two adults, the asset limit increases by CHF 40’000 for each additional person. The limit increases by CHF 16’000 for each minor child. The asset limit increases by 25% for people entitled to an AHV old-age pension, entitled to at least half an IV pension, or permanently dependent on help from others for their care.
- Occupancy per apartment: +/- one person (e.g. a 3.5-room apartment = min. 2, max. 4 people). Only people who live in the apartment as their permanent residence or are officially registered there count towards occupancy.
- Acquisition of the corresponding number of cooperative shares (one share per person over 16 years of age), each worth CHF 1‘000.00, and a housing share corresponding to the size of the apartment.
- Apartments are rented only to people whose primary residence and tax domicile are in Bern.
